How to Measure

You can't improve what you can't measure. And right now, most brands have zero visibility into how they're performing across AI answer engines.

There's no equivalent of Google Search Console for ChatGPT. Perplexity doesn't send you a monthly report of your citations. Google AI Overviews don't tell you how often your brand was included.

That's the bad news. The good news: you can build a measurement framework that gives you actionable data — if you know what to track and how.

AEO measurement isn't perfect yet. But the brands that start measuring now will have months or years of baseline data when better tools arrive. That head start is invaluable.

Why AEO Measurement Is Hard

Traditional SEO measurement is built on established infrastructure. Google provides Search Console. Ranking trackers pull SERP data through well-documented APIs. Analytics platforms track organic traffic with precision.

AEO has none of that infrastructure — yet. Here's why:

  • AI responses are dynamic. The same query can produce different responses depending on context, timing, and user history. There's no fixed "ranking" to track.
  • No official APIs for citation data. ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google AI Overviews don't provide brand-level analytics.
  • Attribution is indirect. When a user reads about your brand in an AI response, there may be no click, no visit, and no trackable event.
  • Multi-platform fragmentation. Your brand might be cited on ChatGPT but invisible on Perplexity, or present in Google AI Overviews but absent from Gemini. Each platform has different retrieval logic.

None of these challenges are insurmountable. They just require a different approach than what most marketers are used to.

The Core AEO Metrics

Focus on these five metrics. Together, they give you a comprehensive view of your AI visibility.

1. Citation Frequency

What it measures: How often your brand or content is cited in AI-generated responses.

Why it matters: This is the most direct measure of AEO success. More citations mean more visibility, more trust signals to AI systems, and more potential traffic.

How to track it:

  • Build a query set of 50-100 questions related to your core topics
  • Run each query on ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews, and Gemini monthly
  • Record whether your brand is cited, mentioned, or absent for each query
  • Calculate your citation rate: (queries where cited / total queries) x 100

Track this monthly. Even small improvements in citation rate compound into significant visibility gains.

2. Share of Voice

What it measures: Your brand's percentage of total citations for your target topics, relative to competitors.

Why it matters: Citation frequency alone doesn't tell you how you compare. Share of voice shows your competitive position.

How to track it:

  • For each query in your set, record all brands cited — not just yours
  • Calculate each brand's citation count across the full query set
  • Your share of voice = (your citations / total citations across all brands) x 100
  • Track competitor share of voice to identify threats and opportunities

Share of voice is the AEO equivalent of market share. It tells you who's winning the citation battle for your most important topics — and by how much.

3. Entity Recognition Accuracy

What it measures: How accurately AI systems understand and describe your brand.

Why it matters: Before an AI can cite you correctly, it needs to know who you are. Inaccurate or incomplete entity understanding limits your citation potential.

How to track it:

  • Query each AI platform with brand-specific questions: "What is [Brand]?" "What does [Brand] do?" "Who founded [Brand]?"
  • Score the accuracy and completeness of each response (use a 1-5 scale)
  • Identify specific inaccuracies or gaps
  • Track improvement over time as you strengthen your entity presence

4. AI Referral Traffic

What it measures: Website visits originating from AI platforms.

Why it matters: While not all AI citations generate clicks, those that do represent high-intent traffic. This is the most directly measurable impact of AEO.

How to track it:

  • In your analytics platform, identify referral traffic from: chat.openai.com, perplexity.ai, bing.com/chat (Copilot), and Google AI Overviews
  • Track volume and trends monthly
  • Monitor landing pages — which content drives AI referral traffic?
  • Measure conversion rates from AI referral traffic versus other channels

5. Content Retrievability Score

What it measures: How frequently your content appears in AI retrieval results, regardless of whether it's ultimately cited in the response.

Why it matters: Being retrieved is the first step to being cited. If your content isn't being retrieved, citations are impossible.

How to track it:

  • On Perplexity, check source panels to see if your content was retrieved even when not cited in the main response
  • Track which specific pages are retrieved most frequently
  • Identify content that's retrieved but not cited — this suggests structural or authority improvements could convert retrievals to citations

Tools and Methods

Manual Tracking (Essential Starting Point)

Every brand should start with manual tracking. Build a spreadsheet with:

  • Your query set (organized by topic)
  • Columns for each AI platform
  • Monthly snapshots of citations, mentions, and competitor data

This is labor-intensive but provides the most accurate, nuanced data. Start here even if you plan to automate later.

AI Monitoring Platforms

A growing ecosystem of tools is emerging to automate AEO tracking. Look for platforms that:

  • Query multiple AI engines systematically
  • Track brand mentions and citations over time
  • Provide competitive benchmarking
  • Alert you to changes in citation patterns

The space is evolving rapidly. Evaluate tools based on platform coverage, query accuracy, and reporting depth.

Analytics Platform Configuration

Configure your existing analytics to capture AI-specific signals:

  • Create AI referral segments. Group traffic from ChatGPT, Perplexity, Copilot, and other AI platforms
  • Set up conversion tracking. Measure how AI referral traffic converts compared to other channels
  • Monitor landing page performance. Which pages receive the most AI referral traffic?
  • Track trend lines. Monthly growth in AI referral traffic is a strong directional signal

Search Console Cross-Reference

Google Search Console data can supplement your AEO measurement:

  • Pages appearing in AI Overviews often show distinctive click-through rate patterns
  • Queries triggering AI Overviews may show impression changes
  • Cross-reference your top-performing GSC pages with your AI citation data to identify patterns

Building an AEO Dashboard

Consolidate your metrics into a single dashboard that you review monthly. Here's a recommended structure.

Section 1: Citation Overview

  • Total citation count across platforms (this month vs. last)
  • Citation rate (% of queries where cited)
  • Citation trend line (6-month view)

Section 2: Share of Voice

  • Your share of voice by topic area
  • Top 5 competitors and their share of voice
  • Changes from previous month

Section 3: Entity Health

  • Entity recognition accuracy score (1-5 per platform)
  • Key inaccuracies identified
  • Improvement actions taken

Section 4: Traffic and Conversions

  • AI referral traffic volume and trend
  • Top AI referral landing pages
  • AI referral conversion rate vs. site average

Section 5: Action Items

  • Content gaps identified
  • Pages to update or restructure
  • New topics to cover based on citation opportunities

Your AEO dashboard doesn't need to be fancy. A well-maintained spreadsheet reviewed monthly is infinitely more valuable than an automated dashboard nobody looks at.

Benchmarking Your AEO Performance

Without industry benchmarks, it's hard to know if your numbers are good or bad. Here's how to create meaningful context for your data.

Benchmark Against Yourself

Your most important benchmark is your own trajectory. Are your citation rates improving month over month? Is your share of voice growing? Is entity recognition becoming more accurate?

Consistent improvement matters more than absolute numbers.

Benchmark Against Competitors

For your core topics, your competitors' citation data provides the most relevant benchmark. If your top competitor is cited in 40% of queries and you're at 15%, you have a clear target.

Benchmark by Platform

Your performance may vary dramatically across platforms. You might have strong citation presence on Perplexity but weak presence on ChatGPT. Platform-specific benchmarks help you allocate effort where it matters most.

Set Realistic Targets

Based on early data from brands actively pursuing AEO:

  • Citation rate improvement: 5-10% increase per quarter is strong progress
  • Share of voice: Gaining 2-5 percentage points per quarter is meaningful
  • Entity accuracy: Moving from 2/5 to 4/5 within 6 months is achievable with systematic effort
  • AI referral traffic: 15-25% quarterly growth as AEO strategies mature

Getting Started Today

If you're measuring nothing right now, here's your first-week action plan:

  1. Build your query set. List 50 questions related to your core topics and brand
  2. Run baseline queries. Test each query on ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google AI Overviews
  3. Record everything. Document citations, mentions, competitor presence, and entity accuracy
  4. Identify quick wins. Look for queries where you're close to being cited but not quite there
  5. Set a monthly cadence. Block time to repeat this process every month

Measurement is the foundation of everything else in your AEO strategy. Without it, you're optimizing blind.

The brands that measure AEO performance today will be the ones making data-driven decisions tomorrow. Start tracking now — even imperfectly — and refine as better tools and methods emerge.
